My job has got to be one of the most awesome jobs in the world. Seriously. I get to watch some of the coolest things at my job, and I'm getting paid to do it. I also get to see some pretty random shows, but they're generally still entertaining. So, here are some useful and some not-so-useful-but-very-entertaining tidbits of information or random impressions I've learned while working.
*We transcribe a show called Dogs with Jobs, and this show seriously makes me want to get a dog. They are seriously some of the prettiest, cutest dogs in the world. There was one dog that lives on a coast guard base in California and his job is to chase the birds away from the landing strips so that landing helicopters and planes don't accidentally kill any of them. Isn't that so cool?
*I transcribed this concert of a set of compositions entitled Innovators, and each of the pieces was inspired by a certain innovator in history, not particularly well-known innovators, but kind of random, cool ones. One guy heard the saying that it always rains after a battle, and so he started doing experiments with smoke and smell. Anyway, one year San Francisco was in the middle of the worst drought of its history and the city government offered something like $10,000 to anyone who could fill the reservoir. This guy then released his smelly smoke and within twenty-four hours or so, it started to pour and the reservoir was filled. He wasn't paid though because apparently his smoke worked so well that the town flooded. Apparently his methods are actually kind of used today.
*The Zula Patrol is this random kids' show that we transcribe sometimes. It's a science show that uses repetition, repetition, repetition to teach kids about random science facts. A little known fact about this little known show is that it has one of the coolest theme songs ever, placed here for your benefit and enjoyment. "Way way up where the planets do the hula, spin and shout till you find yourself on zula..."
*I watched this show called Swimming in Auschwitz about these eight ladies who had survived Auschwitz and were still alive, and they just talked about their experiences. One lady said that she and a bunch of other women were being led to work somewhere and they passed by the officer's quarters, which had a pool. She said it was so hot that she just had to run and jump in and swim...so she did. She actually got out of line to go swim in the officers' pool. And she wasn't shot!
*On a more meaningful note, a couple of weeks ago we were transcribing talks from the BYU Women's Conference this year. One talk given by I don't remember who was about measuring oneself against Christ, and specifically, by following his two great commandments which she described as being three injunctions of love: love of God, love of others, and love of self. She talked about each of these, and it was really interesting. She said that His commandment to "love others as thyself" besides being a commandment to love others was also a commandment to love yourself. She asked, "How can you know how to love somebody else if you don't love yourself?" I could go on for pages and pages about all that this has made me think of, complete with logic equations and circular rants, but I won't bore you or scare you with my musings. I just thought this was great food for thought.
